Extra Reading Diary:Turkish Fairy Tales

all of the stories in the Turkish Fairy Tales unit A were very unique. I liked them for the most part they area all very entertaining.
the stories of fear were almost inspiring to me. I wish that i could walk around with out any fear but i experience fear every day.the The Wizard-Dervish was a strange story but i guess in the end when he realised it was not a dream he tried to do the right thing. The Fish-Peri was probably my favorite story in this set. I thought that the king guy was a jerk and i laughed pretty hard when the baby walks to him and slaps him in the face while talking back to him. who makes some one do that many impossible things. The Crow-Peri was pretty good as well but i still think that i liked the the fish peri better. I decided to read these because most of the stories that i have read are only one pages but these are 2 pages. it was a good change of pace for me. while reading i did see a pattern. any time they used time the used 40 days and or nights. what is the importance of this and why does it show up in each story.

Reading Diary B: British North America

These were my thoughts while reading the British NorthAmerica unit.

Origin of the ChinookWindAww man pore hare last his pipe, his friend and his old home. I also think its kind of strange that they are smoking.

Origin of the Pleiades- I am pretty sure I have heard this before but it was told differently and how to due with a bow.
Turtle and Thunder-This is a cute little story or at least it would be if the little turtles did not die

The Making of Lakes andMountains-wow she was able to escape and make to the water.

Coyote's Gifts-  of course if you ask coyote not to touch the baskets he is going to open them.
The Coming of the Salmon- its interesting how different tribes come up with different storys for the same thing.

Coyote and the Salmon-so we have not seen it in a while but the number 4 came back in this story

Wolverene and the Geese- there is another story where the ducks eye turns red for looking but it is from a man not an animal.

Nanebojo and the Geese-this was a very clever idea if only the grand mother would have listened.

The Adventures of Nanebojo- nanebojo is a strange guy. I did not know he could turn in to things.

Coyote and Fox-the coyote should have just kept the cape that he had.

Wolverene and Rock—he should just have been happy that he was alive.

Reading Diary A: British North America

These were my thoughts while reading the British North America unit

Beliefs- this is an interesting take on how the world is. it would be interesting to see the mountains  while they were humans.
Creation of the World- this is cool I like the idea of falling out of the sky in to the water because what else would be below the sky.
How the Earth Was Formed- this is similar to the last one but this time it was just animals.
Creation of the Earth- got to keep all these people where they can see each other so what better place than the sky.
Origin of Rivers in Queen Charlotte Islands- that is a cool story for how the rivers were made.
Origin of Haida Land- its creepy that he took the bones out of the baby
Raven and Moon Woman- so raven broke the moon and made it into stars that was a cool idea I just wish he was not so winey.
Creation of Light – he got way to excited also the chanting in this maks me thing of finding nemo.
Grizzly Bear and Coyote- woo go coyote saving us all from darkness.
Origin of Light and Fire- at first I thought he was bad but really he just wanted the fire.
The Burning of the World – this story remindes me on Noah’s ark
Why the Sun is Bright- so its not the light of the sun but the robe.
The Man in the Moon – Im still not sure where the deer came from.

Extra Reading Diary: Blackfoot Stories

These were my thoughts as i was reading Blackfoot Stories

The Smart Woman Chief- the man thought he was being tricky but it was the woman who was okaying tricks on him. you should never judge people on their looks. why did it have to be a pine tree,
Bobcat and Birch Tree- this was like a two in one story. it reminded me of the boy who cried wolf but this time it was a nose and a bobcat.
The Red-Eyed Duck-every time some one falls asleep bad things happen. these people need to stay awake while they are cooking.
Kut-O-Yis, The Blood Boy- the son in law is so mean. the old man helps every day but yet gets nothing for it. I hope this child will help them
Kut-O-Yis, The Blood Boy (cont.)- the son in law got what was coming to him. I am glad that he did not punish the youngest daughter to badly
Kut-O-Yis, The Blood Boy (cont. again)-Kut-O-Yis is a real hero he keeps giving food and houses to people that need it.
Kut-O-Yis, The Blood Boy (cont. yet again) not only did he kill the snake but he also killed the wind sucker. in still not sure what a wind sucker is but he killed it.
Kut-O-Yis, The Blood Boy (end)- wow he really did a good job cleaning the earth of bad people. I would still like to know the importance of the number 4 it has come up in a few stories now.

Reading Diary B: Apache Tales

these were my thoughts while reading the Apache Tales unit.

The Supernatural Person in the Lake- Im not sure what he means when he gives the power the supernatural one. is he talking about himself because he leaves after that

The Man Who Traveled with the Buffalo- ok i was very confused until i read your notes. I wish that part of the story would have been included.
Coyote Steals a Man's Wife- silly Coyote thinking the man was not going to do anything to him.
Coyote Takes Arrows from Owl- not only does he take the arrows but he kills him with them as well.
Antelopes Take Arrows from Coyote- I like the second version much better It gives more detail on why they are doing this.
Coyote Tries to Make His Children Spotted- this story is so dark but it serves that trickster coyote right.
Coyote and Porcupine- these animals are quite mean to each other. I guess thats just the way the world works.
Coyote Kills the Prairie Dogs- he should have not been so greedy.
Coyote and His Hosts- dont try to be something you are not.
Coyote and Mosquito Marry Under False Pretenses- I was really hoping they would marry each other.
Coyote and the Mexicans- I mean naturally if money is in the tree it would become an apple tree...
The Animals Race- this reminds me of the saying work smart not hard. while everyone else was running he just got to fly there.

Reading Diary A: Apache Tales

these were my thoughts while reading the Apache Tales unit.

The Emergence- I guess the title says it all. we emerged from the earth and all went our different ways. I wonder what happened to the old people.
The First War- so the old people do come back and they are the ones who introduce sleep. that guy put up a fight.
The Culture Heroes and Owl- this story is funny to me, here we have these two boys who just want a toy to play with just they get trapped and use the power of story telling to save them.
The Killing of the Monsters- this was pretty cool i like how he out smarted everything to kill it.
Naiyenesgani Rescues the Taos Indians- Why is everything done in 4's?
Naiyenesgani Takes His Leave- so thats why there is such an importance on animals in their culture.
Coyote Secures Fire- i am guessing a fire drill is how they make fire because it has been brought a few different times now.
The Swallowing Monster- some times these stories have so much going on in them...we are running from a monster and now the girl is a frog?
The Man Who Helped the Eagles- it would be so cool to fly with the eagles.
Releasing the Buffalo- in every story they are playing this hop and pole game
The Origin of Corn and Deer- again we see the importance of the number 4

Reading Plan

Second Half Reading Plan
For weeks 9 and 10 I would like to read the Apache stories and the British North America stories. I picked these because i like the stories that about tricksters and these have quite a few tricksters in them .
In week 11 I think I am going to read Nursery Rhymes. these are fun little stories and i would like to read more of them.
For week 12 I would like to read Beowulf. my reason for this is because he is just a beast.
In week 13 I am going to read Brothers Grimm (Hunt) I have heard these stories before but i have never read the Brothers Grimm version
For my last reading I think I want to read Lang's European Fairy Tales I. No particular reason for this I just think they sound good.

Reflections: Looking Forward

The first half of the semester started off a little rocky but now that we are rolling things are going well. I think for this 2nd half I would like to try and get my work done a little sooner or maybe even double up so i can take a day or two off. I would like to see my writing improve as we move through the second half of this semester. I plan on doing this by spending more time looking over my work.  I think right now I am on course to make an A so I just need to keep on doing what i have been doing and I should be fine. I might even be able to finish early if i do a few more extra credit things.
quote I made here
Its not always about what you do or how you do it but its the impact that matters.

Reflections: Looking Back

Wow! Are we already half way done?
This class has been amazing so far, and thats really saying something coming from me because I really dont care for reading or writing.  I think part of the reason that it has been so good is because of the feed back that people give. The feed back that people have given has been really helpful. I feel as though it has made me a better writer. I am also enjoying writing stories I try really hard to make them good.  My schedule for this class has worked pretty well. I just try to get one thing done a day  and that tends to keep me on track with my points. I also make this the first thing that i do every day and because of that i work on it from home. If I keep going the way that I am now I should end this class with an A!

Extra Reading Diary: West African Folktales

these were my thoughts while reading West African Folktales

I really enjoyed reading How We Got the Name "Spider Tales"- that spider is a smart animal playing on the cockiness of the others to get what he wants. i really liked how it showed the characteristics of four different animals. the bees were over excited, the boa was two proud the tiger was to curious and the spider was smarter than them all.
so as i was responding to stories a few weeks ago i had read a rewrite version of Anansi and Nothing. I was excited to read this story again because the ending always cracks me up.
I thought that these stories would be similar to the south african stories but they were not. these stories were full of spiders. while the south african stories were full of jackals. I wonder why this difference is. it could just be the stories that were selected or it could be that people in south Africa did not see as many spiders. I know that native americans also use the spider as a trickster. I thinks that it is cool that two completely different people groups can both describe one animal in the same way

Reading Diary B: South African Folktales

These were my thoughts as i was reading South African Folktales.

Over all I found these stories to fun and entertaining. I really like the simplicity of these folktale types of stories. i think that they revival a lot about a culture.
While reading The Dance for Water I could not help but think how similar this was to The Story of a Dam. I wounder why this is?
I also really liked the story of The White Man and Snake. although it was one of the shorter stories that we have read I found it to be full of information. First off i thought it was interesting that it said white man,  as these stories are set in Africa i would not expect for a white man to be the main subject. I also liked the lesson that was tough. even though you are nice to some one does not mean that they will be nice to you. also that peoples nature does not change over knight. something that i found interesting about this story is that the jackal ended up helping instead of hurting like he does in most stories.

Another story that i liked was Lion Who Thought Himself Wiser Than His Mother. I think this story shows the importance of understanding someone nature before just trusting them and it also shows that you should listen to your parents

Reading Diary A: South African Folktales

these were my thoughts while reading South African Folktales

The Lost Message- Silly ants should have just worked together and they would have been fine. I dont understand why it is so hard for some people to get along
The Monkey's Fiddle- I really liked this story it was fun and it also showed how powerful music can be.
The Tiger, The Ram, and The Jackal- the silly tiger was just scared of what he did not know.
The Lion, The Jackal, and The Man- I liked seeing this story from the lions point of view and how he thought that the mad pulled out a rib when it was really jus a knife.
The World's Reward- this story was very similar to the last one but this time it was from the mans point of view. I wounder if there will be more stories when they take one view and switch it to another.
Tiger and Jackal- This story makes me thing that they jackal is the African version of the trickster.
Tink-Tinkje- Im really sure what happened at the end of this story of what that has so do with the rest of it.
The Lion and Jackal- the lion should know by now not to trust the loin.
Jackal Fools Lion Again- man these lions really need to stop trusting the jackals.
The Hunt of Lion and Jackal- again the jackal tricks the lion. I wonder why this is such a popular theme in Africa
Story of Lion and Little Jackal- okay I am kind of getting tired of this same story over and over again. The Lioness and the Ostrich- Why does the lion always lose in these stories?
The Story of a Dam- just when I thought lion would win the jackal got him again

"Week 6 Review

This is my favorite post from the week. I like it because some times I feel like we get discouraged when we dont know how to do something. We should not get discouraged though because doing things that we do not know how to do is the only way we can learn to do them.

Extra Reading Diary: Chinese Fairy Tales

These were my thoughts as I was reading Chinese Fairy Tales

The Favorite of Fortune and the Child of Ill Luck- I guess you can take a person out of a situation but you can never really change who they are.

The Cave of the Beasts- It was messed up that the father was going to kill his daughters over eggs but I think what they were trying to show is to tell the truth, dont keep secrets and to forgive each other.

The Panther- this story reminded me of the big bad wolf. I always thing its interesting when there are similar stories from different places.

Why Dog and Cat are Enemies- this is like a shorter version of story when the prince loses his ring so the animals go out and find it but in this story the dog and cat end up hating each other

Yang Oerlang- I thought it was pretty cool that he just picked up mountains and smashed the suns with them. im glad he left one though or we would have a hard time seeing.

The Lady of the Moon- this was a little confusing because i thought we just read about the suns being destroyed. do they havedifferent tellings of this in other stories as well?

The Girl with the Horse’s Head or the Silkworm Goddess- this story was very strange there were a few things that just did not seam right about it.

The God of War- Guan Yu is so cool he is such a mighty warrior. He is the reason I read this section. I really like him and the values that he holds.
Guan Yu from wikimedia
The Miserly Farmer- he got him pretty good maybe if he had just helped it would not have ended so bad. also it makes me think of aladdin for some reason.

The King of the Ants- I am really not sure what i just read here. ok after reading that Emmet means ant it makes a little more scene. just because your king of something does not mean that your are the most powerful
